New DHCP Client-Side Features in the Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Vendor Class Identifiers for Microsoft Devices

The DHCP client in Windows 10 has been updated in the April 2018 Update to include new client-side features. One of these features is the ability to send a Vendor Class Identifier (VCI) in DHCP requests. This VCI is used to identify the type of device that is making the request, and can be used by DHCP servers to provide customized responses.

The VCI for Microsoft devices is MSFT 5.0. This VCI will be sent in all DHCP requests from Windows 10 devices that are running the April 2018 Update or later.

Benefits of Using the VCI

There are several benefits to using the VCI in DHCP requests:

  • Improved security: The VCI can be used to identify devices that are not authorized to access the network. This can help to prevent unauthorized devices from gaining access to sensitive data.
  • Enhanced performance: The VCI can be used to provide customized responses to DHCP requests from specific types of devices. This can help to improve the performance of the network for these devices.
  • Simplified management: The VCI can be used to group devices together for easier management. This can help to reduce the time and effort required to manage the network.

How to Configure the VCI

The VCI can be configured using the following steps:

1. Open the Network and Sharing Center. 2. Click on the "Change adapter settings" link. 3. Right-click on the network adapter that you want to configure and select "Properties". 4. Click on the "Configure" button for the DHCP client. 5. Select the "Advanced" tab. 6. In the "Vendor Class Identifier" field, enter the VCI for your device (MSFT 5.0). 7. Click on the "OK" button to save your changes. The VCI will now be sent in all DHCP requests from this device.
